RANDOLPH COUNTY TEA PARTY
MAY 5TH
The meeting was opened with prayer, the pledge of allegiance and singing the national anthem.

Keven Law, Director of the Randolph County Economic Development was our guest speaker. Important points from his presentation included:

The Randolph County Economic Development Foundation (REDC) has a twenty five member board, plus the three County Commissioners. Mr. Law is an employee of REDC, not an employee of Randolph County.
For the past twenty years, the unemployment rate for Randolph County has been approximately 7% higher than the national rate of unemployment. This year that 7% has decreased to 2%, affirming the recession our country faces.
55% of Randolph County employers employ less than 5 people, 86% of Randolph County employers have fewer than 20 employees.
Economic development tools A not set up to help existing businesses, however, Mr. Law indicates that the REDC attempts to do that as well as entice new businesses to our area.
The new website for the Randolph County Economic Development was shown. It is to this site that prospective businesses go to find information about the county. This site includes data regarding available skill levels of residents and other information. The site does allow the REDC to know how many hits the site has had.
REDC has applied for an additional $50,000 grant from the US Department of Agriculture and Rural Development fund.
Mr. Law explained that it is dangerous to have all or the majority of jobs in a community of the same type. A major manufacturing concern that goes under would then take the majority of jobs with it.
There is also a need to match the skill sets of the area to proposed projects. Mr. Law explained that the county/community will never get all of the prospective businesses they work with and that is why it is so important to keep the pipeline full of prospective projects.
The Pet Food Project proposed near the ethanol plant was discussed. It was noted the commitment of 68 jobs at an average hourly rate of $16.50 is a commitment that has been made in writing.
Mr. Law also discussed the possibility of wind farms in the county and discussed areas that are most promising for this type of project, stressing that any project with wind would be at least a 100 million dollar project and could have a major impact on Randolph County.
He also discussed the "brown fields" or abandoned buildings that could have EPA implications and how REDC is attempting to get these buildings back into use.
Mr. Law took the time to answer audience questions following his presentation.

Ron provided the Financial Report, noting that $648 has been donated for the rally and $600 is available for postage for the Adopt a Soldier project.

Steve and Lois Wright provided an update on the Adopt A Soldier project;

Steve read thank you letters received from soldiers.
There is a need for additional addresses so those with computer ability could go to www.anysoldier.com and request addresses.
Ron has contacted Winchester community schools to request that grades 1-6 participate in gathering items to be put into our packages.
Herb has followed up with the Mayor about placing collection boxes locally. Herb has also printed information regarding this program on the back of the fliers for the We the People rally.

We will meet at 5:30 (one hour before our regular meeting on May 19th) to prepare boxes for mailing.

Sharon and Jim provided an update on the We The People Rally of June 12th:

The script and rehearsals for the Re-enactment of the Constitutional Convention of 1787 are occurring each week and great progress is being made.
Wick's Pies has put up the billboard publicizing this event on US 27 by the overpass. It looks great!
The posters and fliers for the event are available. Everyone was asked to sign up, take posters and note which community they will be putting posters in. Please take fliers to churches, sororities, community groups etc.
Volunteers are and will be needed!!!! This is a major event and everyone must help! Attendees signed up to help "meet and greet", set up of the site, clean up of the site etc.
More school children are needed to be a part of the event and carry flags. Kids from age 10 up are needed. The kids will need to wear black pants and white shirts and black shoes. Black tricorn hats will be provided to the children and they get to keep these.
Costumes are being arranged, the sound system is set up.
Corporate sponsor $$ are still needed. We would like to be able to rent tents to place over the seating (in case of rain and also to keep the crowd out of the sun) but this is terribly expensive!!!!!
Sharon provided the State Legislative Report, specifically reporting on bills that have reached the governor's desk and have been signed.

COLA pay for teachers is now to be tied to merit performance.
A bill allowing the carrying of a firearm in your vehicle, even without a concealed carry permit has been signed
The Senate has a redistricting plan in the works, as does the Indiana House. This will bear watching as currently district lines are drawn to favor the Democrat party.
Please visit www.IN.gov to see what bills are in process and what is going on in our Indiana Legislature.
Dodie reported on the activities of the Hoosiers for a Conservative Senate, noting that the District 6 group will be preparing information on Senator Lugar's voting record and working on providing talking points as we move closer to the May primary of 2012. Importantly, we must not allow people to tell us that Senator Lugar CANNOT be beaten. This is an old political ploy, convincing the opposition that they cannot win. Senator Lugar can and must be defeated. And the same goes for the Presidential election, President Obama can and MUST be defeated.

Senator Mike Pence announced on Wednesday that he will seek the office of Governor of Indiana.

John and Herb had attended the County Health Board meeting and returned to our meeting to report that at the meeting, Helen Snyder resigned from the Board. They also reported that a replacement County Sanitation Director has been hired.

The first Republican Presidential candidate debate was scheduled to be on Fox News at 9 p.m. so the meeting was adjourned at 8:30 p.m.

The next meeting is May 19th, 6:30 p.m. at the Moose Lodge in Winchester.

RANDOLPH COUNTY TEA PARTY .................APRIL 21, 2011

The meeting was opened with prayer and the video of a marine stunning the crowd at a Tea Party gathering by singing the fourth verse of our National Anthem. This was followed with the Pledge of Allegiance and our singing of the first and fourth verse of the National Anthem.

We opened the meeting with a social time, allowing people to introduce themselves and have some cookies and drinks.

Ron provided the financial report.

Group Projects:

ADOPT A SOLDIER-------Steve and Lois Wright read Thank You messages we have received from soldiers who have received packages from the Randolph County Tea Party. A major donation ($500.00) has been received from the Ridgeville American Legion to provide postage for packages. We are now faced with $$ for postage and need items to send. We will set a date for the next mailing at the May 5th meeting. Ron has contacted the Winchester Community Schools to see if the 1-6 grades can collect items for the soldiers. Members are asked to ask their community groups and associations if donation boxes can be set out at different locations. Herb has spoken to the Mayor about placing boxes in public buildings in Winchester. We wish to obtain the addresses of soldiers of local families and will ask the Winchester-Gazette to run a story requesting that people send us these addresses and we will ensure a package goes to our local service men and women.

WE THE PEOPLE RALLY - JUNE 12TH Jim and Randy provided an update on plans for the Spring Rally. Fliers (2500) and posters (300) have been printed and we will begin distributing them after the May 5th meeting. Herb is printing information about the Adopt A Soldier program on the back of these fliers. We will begin with the fliers and will begin putting posters up around the middle of May. We will need help ensuring we get fliers and posters to all communities to encourage attendance at the rally. Sharon Smith has reported that Wick's pies will be placing a billboard (see attached) at the overpass beginning May 1st and staying up for five weeks. A great thank you to Mike Wickersham for this billboard.

Costume fittings at Civic Theatre are scheduled for April 26th at 4 p.m.
Food vendors (non-profit) have been arranged and the Little League will sell drinks at their concession stands. We are working on obtaining a tent to cover the seating in case of rain. We continue to seek corporate sponsors to offset the costs of the rally. This rally is a community educational event and will place the face of the Randolph County Tea Party out to the public. We have been very fortunate to have Richard Mourdock agree to be our key note speaker and work on the historical re-enactment of the Constitutional Convention of 1787 continues.

LEGISLATIVE
Local ------John Reece reported on local County Commissioner meetings and the meetings of the County Board of Health. He noted that the Health Board continues to work on resolving problems left by the previous director and also reported on the discussions at local meetings regarding the request for approval to build a pet food flavoring plant in Randolph County. Concern that the County Commissioners declined to consider petitions presented by the Mayor of Union City and other citizens was voiced.

State---Todd Rauch provided an update on the State Legislature, noting that due to the walk out by State Democrat Representatives, 23 bills were "killed". He also noted that the upcoming redistricting project was one of the major reasons for the walkout, but that efforts for redistricting are now back in the Senate. He reported that efforts are being made to restart some bills but on this date (April 21), 13 Democrat Representatives again walked out. He reported on legislation that would tie teachers' COLA increases to merit and stated this is moving well.

Dodie reported on the Hoosiers for a Conservative Senate project (70 Indiana Tea Parties uniting to ensure that Richard Lugar is NOT re-elected) and voiced some concern about the pace of the project. However, when we speak with family, friends, co-workers etc about this Senate race and we receive the response that "you will never be able to beat Lugar" and "Lugar has a tremendous war chest", we must respond that YES, Senator Lugar CAN be removed! We must believe that we can win this challenge and we must convince others that this can happen. It is one of the best political ploys available for the challenged party to convince the public that any effort to beat them is futile.

Wall Builders Program -- Dean, Sue and others reported on the Wall Builders program sponsored by the Richmond Tea Party on April 16th and noted there were catalogs of information available from this group available.

National - - -As we move toward 2012 and the Presidential election we must also not be taken in by the ploy that President Obama cannot be challenged and beaten. Again, we BELIEVE and Know that this President must not be re-elected. Do not allow others to convince you that this cannot happen.

A quiz on the Constitution was taken by those present, showing us that we all have much to re-educate ourselves about our Republic!

The next meeting will be on Thursday May 5th at 6:30 p.m. a the Moose Lodge. Our guest speaker will be Kevin Law of the Randolph County Economic Development.

Bring a friend. Come prepared to sign up to help with flier and poster distribution for the rally and to sign up for other areas where the rally committee needs help!

The meeting was closed with the video "God Bless America, Again" by Bobby Bare.

Regular meeting of Randolph County Tea Party of April 7th, 2011. The meeting was opened with prayer, Pledge of Allegiance and the singing of the National Anthem. (We are getting better at this song folks!!)

Ron provided the financial report and thanked those present for the continued donations for postage for mailing packages for our Adopt A Soldier project.

Sharon provided her final presentations (attached) on the Constitution. She noted that most of the material for her presentations were taken from the book We Still Hold These Truths To Be Self Evident by Mathew Spaulding. Key notes included:

  • The National government has become dominant over our lives.
Passage of legislation with little regard for how it impacts citizens is a common thing.
  • The decisions and impact of decisions by the Judicial Branch make this branch one that creates legislative.
  • There are constantly people with their hands out, wanting their taxes (or not) to pay for more government services.
  • We have become dependent on our government.
  • Current politics seem to be debates about the true meaning of America.
  • Woodrow Wilson started the trend of remaking America and we have now moved to the redistribution of wealth as a political strategy.  This is a continuation of the Progressive movement.

  • HOWEVER -It is not to late to get our Republic back but it will take work-We must have a basic understanding of our history, we must find out what is being taught in our schools, we must have teachers who teach the history of the Constitution, we must challenge judicial decisions that are not constitutional, we must elect only those people who will uphold America's principles and who will uphold the Constitution.
  • We ,must be knowledgeable!!

Steve and Lois Wright gave an update on the Adopt A Soldier project and Steve read several Thank You notes and letters received from soldiers who have received our packages. New items suggested included pillowcases and twin size sheets. An additional 15 packages were made up to be mailed prior to tonight's meeting. Ron Preston had written an excellent Letter to the Editor which was printed in the Thursday paper, thanking people for donations of items and of funds.

There was open discussion about the impact of this program and the length of time some of these soldiers have been away from their homes. One soldier has been deployed five times. These items and the caring that is shown to the soldiers mean so much to them. We will include donation boxes for this program at the June 12 rally.

Randy provided an update on the We The People, Constitutional Rally that will occur on June 12th. 2500 fliers and 300 posters are being printed and we will need help to get these out to the county and surrounding areas.  We still need to have school children sign up to carry the 13 colony flags, old glory and the Indiana state flag. Names should be given to Bob Curry as he will be organizing the kids.

We have posted the information and date of the rally on the Indiana Tea Party website and have invited surrounding Tea Parties. The members involved in the re-enactment are meeting regularly and working on the script for the re-enactment. Members will be going to the Civic Theatre on April 26th at 4 p.m. for fitting for costumes for the re-enactment.

Count Commissioner Troy Prescott had requested time to explain some of the issues surrounding the pet food flavoring plant that is potentially going to be built in Randolph County. He stated that the 5-4 vote from the Area Planning Commission means that no decision has been made to accept the plant but that the County Commissioners have voted for re-zoning to allow the plant. He described his recent visit to Iowa to visit an existing plant and states that there is a "smell" surrounding that plant but that the smell was not really a detriment and that the locals he spoke to in Iowa did not have strong negative feelings about the plant there. He described the smell as a slight burnt feather smell. Mr. Prescott answered questions and provided information. He also provided some brochures about the ethanol plant and they are available to anyone requesting one (ron and Dodie have them). He reported how the "subsidies" that are discussed about the ethanol plant are provided to the "blending" plants, and that the local plant does not receive these subsidies.  Questions about the pet flavoring plant included many questions about hiring practices, who would be employed, local residents vs those brought from outside, illegal alien employees, union vs non union.  Mr. Prescott answered such questions to the best of his knowledge.

Due to time constraints the reports on local, state and federal legislation were shortened and will be brought to the next meeting. Todd Rauch did report that it appears that one of the main reasons the Democrats in Indiana fled the state was to have a negative impact on the redistricting which must occur this year. Todd will follow up on this more thoroughly at the next meeting.

Dodie reported that the Hoosiers for a Conservative Senate continue to work on plans to ensure Senator Lugar will not return to the Senate after the 2012 election. Again, a more thorough report will be given at the next meeting.

During open discussion there was a need to remind individuals of the Tea Party Manners and that we do not interrupt people who are speaking or have the floor and we hold our private conversations until after the meeting so as not to interrupt the speakers.

There was also discussion about the 2011 budget and Paul Ryan's 2012 Path to Prosperity plan.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:55.

The next meetings of the group and possible speakers are:

April 21st         Planned speaker, Kevin Law of the Economic Development Office
May 5th           Planned Speaker  A physician to discuss impact of Obamacare on Medicare/Medicaid
May 19th         Planing to show the movie Agenda For Grinding Down America
June 2nd         Planned Speaker, someone from the Randolph County Health Department

See you all on April 21........Bring a friend.

Sept 16, 2010 Meeting Notes

Ron opened the meeting with prayer, the Pledge of Allegiance and singing the first and fourth verse of our National Anthem.

New attendees were introduced and asked to tell us how they learned of the meetings.

Dodie introduced our guest speaker, Mr. Craig Kinyon, CEO of Reid Hospital and Health Care Services in Richmond and explained that Mr. Kinyon has been asked to discuss the health care reform bill and how that bill might impact health care services, healthcare providers and US citizens.

Mr. Kinyon opened by stating there is much of what is occurring in healthcare and with the reform bill that is not "solid". With a bill of over 3000 pages there are many questions. Craig stated that a word search of "the secretary shall" in the bill revealed 1000 references to what the Secretary of Health and Human services might do.

The first "uninsured patient:" will not appear until 2014. Craig also noted that there is much that is included in the bill that is not being covered by the news media. He noted that there have been "problems" in the health care system since 1983 and that these problems involve how to pay for healthcare and this is not addressed in the reform bill.

Some highlights of the discussion included:

  • There are three groups of "uninsured". Those under the age of 30 who do not feel they are going to need healthcare insurance and therefore do not purchase it, a middle class group of citizens who have the means to purchase health care insurance but do not and then those who cannot afford health care insurance.
  • These groups make up the 50 million uninsured people in our country. This reform bill only provides insurance to 27 million of those, 23 million will remain uninsured. Only 19 million uninsured will be covered when the bill takes effect in 2014, it will take an additional five years to actually cover this 27 million.
  • The original cost of this bill was noted to be 970 billion dollars. Congress knew they must keep the cost below 1 trillion for the bill to pass, so they removed the payment adjustments to physicians that is required by law, thus decreasing the cost to 840 billion. This cost adjustment must still occur and the true cost of the bill will exceed 1 trillion dollars. In addition, if nothing is done, payments to physicians for the care they provide Medicare patients will be cut by 23.1% in November of this year. Imagine the impact this decrease in payment will have on the ability and willingness of physicians and other providers to take on new medicare or medicaid patients. Again, this payment decrease will be a result of Congress' deferring to address the payment schedule for physicians in order to keep the "cost" of this reform bill below 1 trillion dollars.
  • This cut, and other cuts in payments to physicians has contributed to a large number of physicians seeking and obtaining employment by hospitals. This results in hospitals subsidizing physicians incomes. Hospitals employ physicians in order to provide needed services to the community and under the realization that without physicians to admit patients and order care, hospitals would be without patients.
  • Payments to hospitals and other providers by Medicare and Medicaid have not met true hospital costs of services for many years. Medicaid pays 21 cents on the dollar for hospital services, Medicare pays 37 cents on the dollar. The difference of true costs and what is paid by Medicare and Medicaid is passed on to patients with private insurance and private pay patients. The true issues in healthcare is payment methods.
  • This reform bill will result in additional numbers being added to Medicaid rolls, further increasing the deficit hospitals face when they do not receive full payment for services provided.
  • The bill also includes a major tax to "medial device" manufacturers. Who purchases medical devices? Hospitals. The device manufacturers will pass on this tax in the form of increased prices for medical devices and the hospitals will be forced to pass on this additional cost to the patients.
  • This bill introduces a tax on indoor tanning salons. This may be an open door for taxation on other purchases; i.e. soda pop...etc.
  • This bill includes a "readmission" penalty to hospitals. Should a patient be admitted with pneumonia, be sent home with instructions for follow up with their physicians, antibiotics to take, rest etc, but the patient does not follow up and has a relapse that results in readmission, the hospitals will not be paid for services provided during this readmission.
  • In response to questions about the American Medical Association and the National League of Nursing support of this bill, Mr. Kinyon explained the low number of physicians who are members of this organization and reported that there are Tea Party Physician groups who oppose the reform bill.
  • Mr. Kinyon also addressed the impact that private imaging centers, walk in clinics and other healthcare service providers who can choose which patients they serve has on the ability of hospitals to keep a good bottom line and noted that Medicare reimbursement rates to hospitals are already being cut. He noted that citizens who have "Cadillac" insurance plans will be taxed--- unless these citizens belong to a union that has received a bye in this bill.
  • Issues of quality were discussed and Craig showed how individuals can check the quality of physicians and hospitals through Internet sites. He noted that Reid scores in the top 3% nationally for surgical quality of care, the top 10% nationally for heart attack quality of care and is 5th in Indiana for all quality indicators. Under the Voluntary Hospitals of America, Reid has been recognized for Clinical Excellence and Superior System Performance.

Mr. Kinyon addressed questions about the difficulty of cost comparisons for healthcare providers due to the complexity of services. Each patient and each procedure is different. The group thanked Mr. Kinyon for his remarks and for the information.

Ron introduced Stuffy the Conservative, our new mascot. Stuffy is a stuffed eagle made of French Rooster feathers (it is illegal to stuff a real eagle) and showed the group two eagle prints that have been donated to the group. There was discussion of what to do with the eagle and the prints. It was decided to keep the eagle as a mascot (he looks very regal next to the flag) and to see auctioning of the numbered prints of the eagles.

Ron Frazier provided a financial report. Income from the raffle of an eagle print, donations and sale of merchandise from the Lynn Lions Fair was reported. A new balance of $830.90 was reported. We have no debts.

Sharon Smith provided a report on her attendance at the September 12 Tea Party Rally in Washington DC. Similar rallies were held on the same day in St. Louis and Sacramento.

Those attending Bill Davis' Rally at the Roundhouse in Portland on September 11 also provided reports. Attendees were especially positive about the presentations by Representative Mike Pence and State Treasurer Richard Murdock.

Dodie reminded the group that the Mardi Gras will be held on October 6,7,8, 9th. The group will have a booth for information and will have a float in the parade on Saturday. Sharon Smith is coordinating the manning of the booth and has a sign up sheet available. Everyone needs to help with this and sign up to work some hours! We must be visible and we must stand up!

Ron and Dodie are coordinating the float. A trailer has been obtained and we do have a volunteer to pull the float. Much help will be needed to prepare the float and ALL are encouraged to ride on the float. The parade starts at 5 pm so we need to be in the Armory parking lot, ready to decorated by 2:30 p.m.

The Farm Bureau, News Gazette and the Chamber of Commerce will hold the "Meet the Candidate Forum" on Tuesday October 19 that the 4-H building. Again, we will have a booth and help will be needed. All are encouraged to attend, meet the candidates and become informed.

Claudia Thornburg, County Clerk has provided a list of candidates for the November election. This has been emailed to members. Read, study and know what persons and issues we will be voting on. Sharon Smith volunteered to research voting records of incumbents and of candidates running for office. Two good internet sites for such records are www.votetrackers.com and www.freedomindex.com.

We have also received a disc with 2009 voting records on it from Ms. Thornburg.

Mike Pence's office will provide us with free copies of the Constitution to hand out at the Mardi Gras and other fairs.

Herb James has prepped his 4 ft by 8 ft sign and after discussion it was determined that one side of the sign will say "Evil Thrives When Good People Do Nothing" and the other side will encourage voting. Both sides will include the www.randolphteaparty.com website.

Wins by candidates supported by Tea Parties across the nation were discussed. All is very encouraging for the Tea Parties, yet we must continue with our signage and with informing voters. Those who brought back yard signs from the previous meeting swapped these signs for new ones. Additional signs will be forthcoming.

Our Letters To The Editor campaign continues with Ron's letter and Sharon's letter being published. Jim Wallace has submitted a letter and John Reece has one in the process. Such letters stir debate and encourage people to become more involved.

It was determined to defer decision on the Adopt a Highway project until after the November election.

Our next meeting is Thursday October 7th.... Guest Speaker is Senator Allen Paul. Indiana has 50 senators in the Indiana State House and Senator Paul is the Senator for our district.

Spread the word, bring friends and neighbors to the meetings. Let make sure we have informed voters and the best voter turnout in Randolph County history.

Notes from September 2, 2010 meeting:

The meeting was opened with the Pledge of Allegiance, singing of the National Anthem and a prayer.

New attendees were introduced and welcomed.

Ron introduced the guest speaker, Mayor of Winchester, Steve Croyle.

Mayor Croyle provided the following information:

  • He discussed his decision to run for the office of Mayor the preparation he did to be able to be elected.
  • He stated that he had had concerns about the infrastructure of the city, concern that the parks had been barricaded, there were no new businesses coming to the city, there was little private investment occurring and there were problems at the waste management center.
  • A goal of working toward a new water treatment plan with new new costs was set by his administration.
  • Mayor Croyle stated that during his two terms manyof the city's drainage problems have been solved, the barricades to the parks have been removed and there has been a great increase in private investment in the city.
  • He noted the improvement in the downtown area, citing increase in retail businesses downtown, noting there are thirteen retail businesses on the town square.
  • He stated that they are attempting to create a "business friendly" atmosphere in the city and that over the past few years Winchester has added jobs. He commented that government does not create jobs but government creates the environment that creates jobs. He stated when Tomasco determined to locate in Winchester an invitation for the city representatives to visit the home headquarters in Japan was received. Noting that this is an important part of Japanese culture he commented that when Tomasco determined to close one of the Indiana plants, it was Columbus IN that was closed rather than Winchester and that as a result 185 additional jobs came to the Winchester plant making it offer 485 jobs for the area.
  • He stressed the need for city officials to "get out and sell ourselves" to seek opportunities for the community in order to keep our children through employment opportunities.
  • He noted that the local governments are funded through property taxes and that when the State reduced property tax but did not affect sales tax or income taxes, local governments lost revenue while the reduction did not affect State government.
  • He stated that he is aware that revenue reductions will continue and the city has affected a reduction in the number of city personnel through attrition and noted that further cuts will be those that affect public safety; i.e. fire personnel, police etc.
  • A move to decrease duplication of equipment and efforts by cooperation between city and county departments is ongoing.
  • Mayor Croyle commented there are 2100 homes in Winchester and there was discussion of the percentage of rental homes and why these units are not seen as a "business".
  • He commented that the city of Winchester has obtained 20-30 properties that the County had foreclosed on and is attempting to provide incentives to return these to "homes".
  • A question from the attendees of the value of using volunteers to assist with community projects was discussed.
  • In response to a question about the Economic Development Council, Mayor Croyle stated Winchester works with the council on expansion of jobs and retention of jobs.

The group thanked Mayor Croyle for his attendance and addressing questions. The purchase of blank yard signs, supplies to make signs and payment of the rent for the Lodge meeting room leaves the group with $483.00

Ron Frazier provided an update on the finances of the group.

Group members who attended the Glenn Beck rally in Washington spoke of their experiences. Jack Culbertson, John Desmond and others spoke of the inspiration the rally gave them and of the dignity and pride of those they met and rallied with. There were eight people in attendance at this meeting who had attended. All commented on the impact the fly over of the geese had on the crowd and them personally.

Legislative Updates were provided by Dodie:

  • Locally-The Lynn Lion's Fair is September 8-9-10 and 11. A sign up sheet to man the booth was passed around
  • The Mardi Gras October 6-7-8-9. Sharon Smith is coordinating setting up the booth and arranging for our float to be in the parade. Sharon will have sign up for the booth. A trailer for the float has been obtained as well as a truck to pull it. Help will be needed to decorate the float and all members are encouraged to ride the float in parade.
  • The Farm Bureau, Winchester Gazette and the Chamber of Commerce will sponsor the Meet the Candidate Forum at the 4-H building on October 19th. The Tea Party will have a booth at this event.
  • A list of count/state candidates and questions that will be on the ballot has been sent by Claudia Thornburg and has been emailed to all on the list.
  • Ms. Thornburg is also working on providing us with voting lists for the county.
  • State:Senator Allen Paul, our Senator in the Indiana State House will be the guest speaker for our October 7th meeting.
  • Nationally;A reminder that the mid term elections are only 62 days from now. Dodie provided a report from the National Tea Party Patriots weekly webinar. She noted that Dick Morris, who was a guest on the webinar stated "the Tea Party is the cleansing agent of United States politics". She also noted that Mr. Morris commented that the Tea Party can use the Internet more effectively than telephoning or door to door and he encouraged Tea Party members and others to use their email lists like Christmas Card lists and forward appropriate information to friends, family and colleagues.
  • Remember 435 members of the House of Representatives and 1/3 of the Congress are up for election in November. Numerous "tea party" supported candidates have been winning primary elections, giving us a major chance to change Congress in November but we must continue to speak up and stand up and encourage everyone to VOTE.

Group Update:

  1. Yard signs made by group members at a sign making meeting this week were available to take home and place in yards. The plan is that you take a sign, place it in your yard, bring it back to the next meeting and swap it for a different saying.. etc.
  2. Herbie James noted he is preparing a 4x8 sign for the corner of his property and is asking for a sign painter and ideas of what to put on the sign. John Reece also noted he has a place for a large sign.
  3. Information on the proposed adopt a highway project for the group was provided in a handout. Please review this to discuss whether we should proceed with this at our next meeting.
  4. Letters to the Editor is an ongoing project. The letter to the editor by Sharon Smith was in the Winchester Gazette. Members are encouraged to write Letters to the Editor.
  5. The new web site www.randolphteaparty.com is up and running. All are encouraged to go to the site and sign up.

Open Discussion:

We are making a difference! All across the country, Americans are standing up and speaking out.

It was reported that in Ohio there is a petition to have the participation in the Healthcare program on the ballot, allowing Ohio residents to vote on whether or not their state will participate. Sharon stated we can go to www.Inteaparty.com and sign a similar petition for Indiana.

There was much discussion about the signs and suggested wording for signs and for wording for the signs at John and Herbie's locations.

A member asked that we obtain a speaker on the Fair Tax for one of our meetings. We will follow up on this.

August 19, 2010 Randolph County TEA Party Meeting
Moose Lodge
Winchester, Indiana
6:00 p.m.

Ron opened the meeting with prayer, the Pledge of Allegiance and the first and fourth verses of the National Anthem.

A moment of thanks was given that the last of our combat troops left Iraq this week and we are all so grateful and thankful for all of our servicemen in harm's way and those who support those in harm's way.

Several new attendees were introduced and returning attendees were welcomed back!

Sharon Smith introduced Joe and Josephine Svec who escaped from Czechoslovakia under communist rule. They came to America and are grateful for the 40 years they have been blessed to live as Americans.

Joe spoke to us about life under communism. He opened by saying that if we lived under communism we would all be very careful to know who saw us attend such a meeting as the Tea Party groups have. He stated citizens under communism were always concerned about where government officials were and if they were watching.

Mr. Svec state there are three levels of survival under communism:

  • Resignation - resigning self to live that way
  • Join the system - become active member of the communists system/party
  • Frustration- at how life is, become more vocal and object to system (these people end up in jail or deceased)
  • Seek opportunity elsewhere - escape the system and the country

He also stated that growing up under communism has levels-

  • Uncertainty, citizens do not know what tomorrow will bring
  • Anxiety - increasing fear as you watch what happens to others
  • Isolation - begin to close self off from others
  • Depression - isolation leads to depression and desperation
  • Back to resignation - begin to believe you cannot change things so become resigned to living under the system.

He then explained how the Communist party changed Czechoslovakia from the capitalist country it was before the war to communism.

  • Began with socialism. And the government tried to convince people that things were better so they raised every one's wages. But there were no differences in wages and citizens began to realize that in leveling wages for everyone, there was no reward for skill, training, effort and there was 76% inflation!
  • The government knew that to have absolute control, they must control the money. A currency exchange program was developed. All citizens were to bring their "crowns" in within a specified period of time to exchange them for new "crowns". BUT no one knew how the exchange would work... initially you received 1 new crown for every 5 old crowns. In order to remove the wealthy class, when you provided over 300 crowns it took 50 crowns to obtain 1 crown.
  • Secondly, the government took the guns away. This gave them certain control. Citizens then had to follow orders, they had no way to protect themselves. He stated if someone tries to take our guns away, we should "thrown them off the balcony"!
  • Under communism, no individual could own business. All businesses were taken away and became government businesses.
  • There was "job control". You could not decide your trade or occupation. The government controlled the numbers in each career and you were told what your career would be.
  • All of this led to long waiting lists for housing (11 years), 6 years wait to purchase a car.
  • Religion was also affected. Churches were taken and "given over to better use". All synagogues were destroyed or converted to better use.
  • All citizens were required to study the Russian language and the Russian culture. Children were taught that this language and this culture was the ideal and all they would ever need. They were required to march on May 1 to show support.
  • Citizens who did not follow the rules/orders or attended church or were reported of other activities by their neighbors could lose their job, be taken off waiting lists for housing etc or worse punishment. Travel was illegal, passports were issued through the Police department - usually costing a great amount.

Joe emphasized that under communism, resentment built and that no one could trust anyone.

There were questions and many thank yous to Joe and Josephine. During discussion, one attendee (who had lived in the Soviet Union) commented that if our government could not figure out how to close our borders, that Putin could give us some ideas. There were also comments that those who chose to come here to live the American dream have concerns that we are losing our liberties.

This was an excellent presentation with lots of appreciation for Joe and Josephine and lots of discussion about martial law etc.

Ron F. provided the financial report. The group continues to be debt free. With the election coming up and activities planned, there will be a need for fund raising.

Legislative Update: (Randolph County Tea Party Business cardswere passed out... Please use these to encourage people to attend! Give them to people who ask you about the Tea Party etc)

Local

  1. The Lynn Lions Fair -September 7-11 We will have a booth to pass out information, work for new members and sell merchandise. Help will be needed to man the booth. Sharon Smith has been working on wording for a flier to hand out all all booths and to be used for door to door canvassing.
  2. Winchester Mardi Gras - October We will have a booth as above. And we will have a float in the parade. Sharon Smith will make arrangements and have sign up sheets to man the booth and help with the float. We do have a trailer for the float but will need a truck to pull the float. All of us should plan to ride the float, throw out candy and be a visible part of our effort.
  3. Farm Bureau/Chamber of Commerce/News Gazette will have a "Meet the Candidates" forum prior to the November General Election. We think the date will beOctober 25th. We will also have a table at this event.
  4. The County Clerk (Claudia Thornburg) has provided a list of all local candidates for the Nov 2 election. This has been emailed to all on the list. Those who do not have email can ask to have a copy mailed to them.

State:

  1. Randolph County Tea Party is requesting a table at the September 11 hog roast at the Jay County Fairgrounds. Each table seats 8 and that table is requested to bring their own dessert. Mike Pence will be the main speaker. Anyone interested in attending should contact Ron or Dodie. Alan Bosler reports he and others have already reserved their table.

National

  1. On the ticket for Indiana Senator to replace Evan Bayh are Brad Ellsworth- Democrat, Dan Coats - Republican and Rebecca Sink Burris - Libertarian. When asked if there was interest in having the Libertarian candidate speak to the group, there was some interest shown. We will contact this candidate to check availability.
  2. Ron and Dodie reminded the group that we are a part of the Tea Party Patriots national organization www.teapartypatriots.org and that we participate in weekly webinars to get national news and to get ideas from groups across the nation. Discussions on this webinar show we are doing very well as a group.

Council Report

The steering council met on Wednesday and discussed the following;

  • Sharon Smith shared a letter to the editor that she has submitted. All members are encouraged to do this to stir up debate and perhaps lead to an article by the News Gazette on the Tea Party movement.
  • Ideas for a social gathering to invite others to meet Tea Party members were discussed. This grassroots movement is built on relationships... having others meet us and hear our concerns may help build membership. This will not be planned until after the elections.
  • A suggestion was made that the group adopt a highway for cleanup (we need practice taking out the trash LOL). John R. will follow up to get information on this.
  • Additional merchandise will be obtained to have available for booths. We do pay all sales taxes on this merchandise when we obtain it.
  • We will check to see if the price we have on our American flags is comparable to Wal Mart etc. Our flags are all MADE IN THE USA
  • Work continues on getting yard signs for a yard sign campaign before the election. We are considering buying blank corrugated signs and posts and having a sign making working party. Hand written signs with various messages may be much more effective than printed commercial signs. This would allow members to have one sign for a couple of weeks then trade it for a new saying the next couple of weeks... this should be very eye catching.

Open Discussion

  • Concern was voiced about the continuing number of "crisis" that are on the media each day. Which crisis will be the one that leads to some type of government action?
  • Support for Israel was strongly voiced as well as concern about the Iranian movement toward nuclear power.
  • Concern about the civics and government education that is provided in our schools continues. We will address this more strongly after the November elections.
  • The power of prayer and faith continues to be a foundation of our group and the need for increased prayer and faith was emphasized.
  • An attendee noted that 1190 am radio locally carries all of the conservative talk radio programs.

A portion of a video provided by the Tea Party Patriots was shown. This video of the 1.2 to 1.8 million people who marched on Washington on September 12, 2009 is inspiring and clearly demonstrates that we are not alone. America is awakening..... A copy of the anthem by Jeremy Hoop "Rise Up" is available.... ask Dodie to copy one for you.
